What is Vapor Barrier Packing?
Vapor Barrier Packing involves enclosing commodities in a water-vapor-proof foil barrier. When stored properly, vapor barrier packing protects the items within the foil barrier for twelve to eighteen months.
How is it done?
Sharp corners and other protrusions are covered. Desiccant is placed in the bag based on container volume. All edges of the bag are heat sealed leaving space to draw a vacuum. A vacuum is used to remove air to a prescribed level and the bag is sealed. The low level of remaining air is limited in ability to carry humidity.
It is important that the proper materials and equipment are used or the commodity will not be sufficiently protected.
What is desiccant?
A desiccant is a substance that absorbs moisture from the air to create and/or maintain a state of dryness.
Which products need Vapor Barrier Packing?
This method of protection is particularly important for sensitive items that are being shipped via ocean transport where salt-laden moisture could invade and jeopardize product integrity.
